There's not quite enough information in this question for me to answer it. When you say the applet is not showing, do you mean:
  1. The interface is using the normal HTML mode but you'd prefer to see the applet
  2. The interface is in applet mode, but all you see is an empty rectangle where the applet should be
  3. The interface is in applet mode, but there is not even an empty rectangle where you expected to see the applet
I'm pretty sure it'll be one of those three cases. Which are you experiencing?

It's the 2nd case, a while ago, I needed to setup a laptop to show the dashboard, the browser was I.E. 7, the area where the applet should be in just a white rectangle, in the I.E. setting, 'use jre xxx for applet' is checked.
then I try to install firefox, but it required some admin privs to let firefox use jre/applet( don't remember what was it, but since firefox is not really an option, I don't want to get down to that).

Ok, in that case it sounds like the applet was failing to start up for some reason. It could possibly be the wrong JRE version, or possibly because IE7 wasn't sending your session cookie back with the applet's requests for data.. see Giulio's post about this bug for more details.

There should be a "Sun Java Console" button under IE's Tools menu. Choose that option, then go to (or reload) the page with the applet on it. If you get any output on the java console, post it here and I can tell you what's really happening.

I will take a look at the console next time I have the laptop.
